A male suspect, wanted on multiple felony warrants, was injured in a shooting involving Larimer County sheriff's deputies on Sunday night in Wellington, according to a news release from the sheriff's office. Deputies had responded to a residence in the 8200 block of 4th Street to contact the individual, leading to a prolonged incident that concluded with the suspect being struck by gunfire.
Following the shooting, the suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. A spokesperson with the Larimer County Sheriff's Office later provided an update, confirming the suspect is "recovering and expected to survive." No deputies sustained injuries during the confrontation.
The incident began just before 2:30 p.m. on Sunday when Larimer County deputies arrived at the Wellington home. Authorities were seeking to make contact with the male suspect, who was known to have multiple felony warrants for his arrest. Upon arrival, deputies instructed the suspect to exit the residence, but he reportedly refused to comply with their commands. The sheriff's office also indicated that deputies believed the individual might have been armed, which heightened the caution taken during the response.
As the situation developed and the suspect remained uncooperative inside the home, the Larimer Regional All Hazards/Crisis Response team was called to the scene to provide assistance. Despite the specialized team's involvement, the suspect continued to resist orders and remained barricaded inside the residence for several hours, prompting a standoff with law enforcement personnel.
The standoff took a critical turn around 7 p.m. when the suspect finally exited the home. However, instead of complying with authorities, he immediately fled from law enforcement on foot, according to the release. Deputies initiated a foot pursuit through the immediate vicinity. The chase concluded in a nearby yard, where shots were fired and the suspect was struck by gunfire. Following the shooting, deputies promptly administered aid to the injured suspect until medical crews could arrive on the scene.
Medical personnel subsequently transported the suspect to an area hospital for care. As is standard procedure in incidents involving law enforcement discharge of a firearm, the Eighth Judicial Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) will take over the investigation into the deputy-involved shooting. The Loveland Police Department is serving as the lead investigating agency for the CIRT team, as stated in the release.
The sheriff's office has stated that additional information, including the suspect's name and specific charges, will be released at a later time. Due to the ongoing nature of the CIRT investigation, which involves extensive interviews and evidence processing, further details are not available at this time, the spokesperson added. This protocol ensures a thorough and impartial review of the incident.
